We live in a culture which tends to ignore or down play things of the spirit; still, human authenticity is most manifest in those activities that point to the transcendental aspect of human nature. At St Theresa Catholic School, we reject the current trend in primary school education which relegates the fine arts to an after thought. We have music classes every day starting in preschool because we feel that music is just that important. Music education is certainly consonant with the Catholic mission to educate the whole person but it has pride and place among other academic disciplines in that it is uniquely suited to cultivate within young students a taste for the Beautiful.
At St. Theresa Catholic School our music program primarily consists of vocal instruction through the Ward Method. The Ward Method was developed to teach American Catholic school children the fundamentals of music so that they would be able to sing the vast repertoire of sacred music which is a part of the Roman Catholic Church’s tradition. The Ward Method is unique in that it has a basis in Gregorian chant. The Ward Method also teaches modern musical notation and song.
We also intend to have instrumental lessons available to our student body after school. In short we want to develop a culture of music at St. Theresa Catholic School and we fully believe that music—like math and science—should be a part of the lives of all our students. A life without music is impoverished.
